Father's Day Reading for Low Beginners
Not all countries celebrate Father's Day (or even Mother's Day) so it's a nice tradition to teach students about. If you have adult students, even if they don't plan to celebrate, they may be surprised to get a card their son or daughter has made in elementary school.
What it Means to be Canadian
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a habit of defining who we are as a country by referring to our highest values. He recently said, "I really do want to highlight that Canada is a country where we look out for our neighbours and we are there for each other in difficult times. And certainly in Fort McMurray, the difficult times they are going through right now is something that we are going to unite around."
Canada Day Fun with Maps
Canada Day is approaching. After teaching a unit on Canada, it can be fun to divide students into groups of three, give each group a large sheet of chart paper and ask them to draw the map of Canada. Make sure all Canada maps in your classroom are covered for this exercise. Have each group label the provinces and their capital cities on their map. Once each group has finished, you can display the maps around the classroom. Worthwhile learning can take place as they compare their maps to a real map and realize what they had out of proportion or incorrectly labeled.
Coins and Bills for Low Beginners
As tax season approaches, we often teach a unit on money. With low beginners, I structure my unit around learning numbers, counting, asking and saying prices, the names of bills and coins, and finally the task of asking for change. I've put together some exercises for Canadian and American teachers on asking for change.
Garage Sales & Thrift Stores
It's summer and I'm back on the topic of second hand shopping. If you are teaching English to new immigrants, they may see something as they walk around their neighbourhoods at this time of year that they don't have in their home countries: garage sales. Likewise, they will likely come across thrift stores or flea markets in their neighbourhoods.
Mother's Day
Many teachers who teach English as an additional language are mothers. In the spirit of thanks to mothers everywhere, I'm sharing a couple pages from my low beginner holidays book for free, to use in your class. I hope you find them useful.
