5 Minutes Prep - 2 Hour Interactive Lesson!
In 2019, Earth Hour is on March 30th from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Earth Hour is an annual symbolic gesture to unite with other people of the world to express a commitment to protect the Earth. The simple act of turning off lights is easy to convey to low beginner English language learners.
The day after your lesson, it is fun to show students images from around the world from cities that participated in Earth Hour. Perhaps you can find images from the cities your students immigrated from.
The worksheets below are free to download for classroom teacher use. Just click on the images and a PDF will pop up that you can print out. If they are not right for your level, please pass them on to a teacher of ESL or EFL low beginners who could use them.
I start the lesson by having students practice the vocabulary by cutting up the pictures and words and then matching them:
I'm a big fan of having students read the story, cut it up, put it back together, and then read it again. And again!
The reading exercise is followed by a cloze passage where students recreate the story again.
Let me know how it works in your class.
