The New Year's story below is geared to literacy and low beginner ESL (ELL) and is followed by questions practising what, when, where, and why and then a cloze passage. If you are looking for something for higher beginner or intermediate ESL, try a jigsaw from Callan's Holiday Jigsaws or Callan's American Holiday Jigsaws.
For the reading below, you will need a few pairs of scissors as students are to read the story, then cut it up, put it back together, and read it again. This reinforces both the left to right directionality and syntax of English. It also gives students at this low level the much needed opportunity to practise reading the story several times.
