In 2019, Earth Hour is on March 30th from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Earth Hour is an annual symbolic gesture to unite with other people of the world to express a commitment to protect the Earth. The simple act of turning off lights is easy to convey to low beginner English language learners.
Your students will notice the ubiquitous hearts and flowers on Valentine's Day. Help them crack the cultural code by teaching about this widely observed special day in Anglo-culture.
Labour Day / Labor Day is celebrated in both Canada and America on the first Monday in September. I've created strip stories and worksheets for American and Canadian ELL students that are free for non-commercial classroom teacher use only. Did you know that Boxing Day, the holiday on the day after Christmas, does not exist in America? It is a federal holiday celebrated in Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Boxing Day is often characterized by shopping since stores usually have their best sales of the year on that day, similar to Black Friday in the U.S. Teaching about holidays helps our students crack our cultural code.
