5 Minutes Prep - 2 Hour Interactive Lesson!
I've created an interactive activity for low beginner ESL to practice page directions. You'll find your class runs smoother when you can draw students' attention to where the class is looking on the page you're working on and make sure everyone is following. You're welcome to download my materials for free to use in your classroom.
I let different students take turns calling out different page directions and having all the students move their pieces at their desks to follow the instructions. This "game" can be played over and over until students feel very familiar with the page directions.
But for this to happen, students will need to learn vocabulary such as: up, down, left, right, in the middle, at the top, in the corner.
My activity uses the shapes circle, square, triangle and rectangle. You could use any shapes or items you want, but you will need a set of shapes for each student (or each pair of students). You can make your own or use mine (at the bottom-scroll down).
First, you need to practice the vocabulary. Here is what the worksheet for practicing it looks like.
You can view it large on your computer and download it for printing here.
Then, here are two worksheets for practicing the directions:
You can download them here.
And you can download some shapes here, though you may be able to find or make better ones yourself! :-)
This is such a great worksheet for my beginners. Thanks so much!
