Card Game for Valentine's Day (or after)

Callan's Holiday Jigsaws 1 (for beginners) and 2 (for intermediate) each have a Valentine's Day jigsaw. The jigsaw includes a board game on love and romance that students have a lot of fun with. American Holiday Jigsaws 1  and American Holiday Jigsaws 2 have the same lesson for Americans.

Maybe your ELL / ESL / EFL students already learned about Valentine's Day last year or maybe you have a class of elementary school students and you're looking for something with less focus on romance?

Why not have a card party and play Hearts? Hearts is an easy card game incorporating elements of both luck and skill, suitable for ages 7 and up. It is played in groups of 3 to 5 players. 

Make it clear that the party is to be English only. Prepare students by teaching gambits like "It's your turn to deal the cards." Ask students to bring finger food snacks to share. 

What follows is a handout with vocabulary, instructions on how to play, and some true or false questions to check comprehension. Have students complete the exercise the day before to be sure everyone is ready to play the game at the party.
